API (Application Programming Interface) – Definition

Application Programming Interface - A set of protocols and tools that allow different software applications to communicate with each other.

APIs enable seamless integration between different systems, allowing developers to access functionality and data from external services without needing to understand their internal implementation. In the context of Salesforce Commerce Cloud, APIs are crucial for connecting the CMS with various e-commerce functionalities and third-party services. SFCC exposes two main API families: the legacy Open Commerce API (OCAPI) and the newer Salesforce Commerce API (SCAPI), which is REST-based and designed for headless and composable architectures. A well-designed API strategy separates concerns cleanly: commerce APIs handle product, pricing, and order data, while a specialized CMS layer manages content, translations, and campaign scheduling through its own API surface, avoiding tight coupling between systems. For content teams, the practical implication is that API design decisions made early in a platform's life have long-term consequences — a system with a rigid or poorly documented API becomes a bottleneck for every future integration, from marketing automation tools to personalization engines. Evaluating API quality (documentation, rate limits, webhook support, authentication model) is therefore as important as evaluating features when choosing supporting systems for an SFCC storefront.
