Content-Migration – Definition

Content migration refers to the process of transferring content in a structured way from an existing system into a new CMS or platform architecture.

A content migration is more than just copying: it requires structural mapping (which content types in the old system correspond to which in the new one?), data quality checks, SEO safeguarding (redirects, canonical URLs), and step-by-step validation. Common mistakes include: migrating without an inventory (outdated content gets carried over 1:1 into the new system), skipping redirects (existing backlinks get lost), and batches that are too large (errors become hard to trace). Best practice is an iterative migration, starting with new content. The redirect strategy deserves particular care since it's most directly tied to preserving accumulated SEO value: every URL that changes needs a corresponding 301 redirect, and skipping this even for a small percentage of URLs can mean losing years of ranking authority. A practical approach exports the full list of existing URLs before starting, maps each to its destination, and validates the redirect map is complete before the old system is decommissioned.
