Mehrsprachigkeit (E-Commerce) – Definition
Multilingualism in e-commerce refers to an online store's ability to deliver content in the appropriate local language for different language regions and markets.
Multilingualism goes beyond simple text translation: prices, currencies, date formats, images, and mandatory legal disclosures all need to be adapted per market. Salesforce Commerce Cloud supports multilingual sites through its localization system. A complementary CMS takes care of coordinating translation processes, tracking status per market, and publishing simultaneously across multiple languages. A frequently underestimated aspect is text expansion: German text is often significantly longer than the English or French equivalent for the same meaning, which means layouts designed and tested only in one language frequently break once real translated content is inserted. Multilingual content strategies also need a clear policy for what happens when a market's translation is delayed relative to the master content: publishing with a fallback to the master language keeps the page complete but creates a temporarily mixed-language experience, while blocking publication until every market catches up can delay a campaign for every market because of a single lagging translation.
