Translation Management System – Definition
A software platform that helps manage the translation and localization process for multilingual content.
TMS platforms automate translation workflows, manage translator assignments, track progress, and integrate with CMS platforms. They support features like translation memory, terminology management, and quality assurance. Translation memory is one of the most valuable TMS capabilities for e-commerce specifically: it stores previously translated segments and suggests or auto-applies them when similar text appears again, which matters enormously for product catalogs where descriptions often share repeated phrases across hundreds or thousands of SKUs. Terminology management prevents a subtler but costly problem — inconsistent translation of brand-specific or technical terms across a catalog, confusing customers and diluting brand voice. Integrating a TMS with a CMS rather than operating them as separate tools matters for workflow efficiency: without integration, content moves out of the CMS into spreadsheets for translation and then has to be manually re-imported, a process prone to version conflicts and delays.
