Translation workflows streamline the localization process by automating task assignment to translators, tracking progress, managing review cycles, and integrating translations back into the CMS. A well-designed translation workflow distinguishes between different urgency and quality tiers rather than treating every piece of content identically: a legally mandated disclaimer needs professional, verified translation with a documented review trail, while an internal product tag might tolerate a faster pass. Workflows also need to handle the reality that translation isn't a one-time event — master content gets updated, which means existing translations become outdated and need re-review, not necessarily full re-translation, since often only a portion of a page actually changed. The most effective translation workflows expose this at a granular, field level rather than marking an entire page as 'needs translation' whenever any part of it is touched, since the latter creates unnecessary retranslation work.
